Oct. 11, 2011 — Michael Hudson, an investigative journalist at the Center for Public Integrity, discusses his book, “The Monster: How a Gang of Predatory Lenders and Wall Street Bankers Fleeced America—And Spawned a Global Crisis.” Hudson’s study explores the origins and conduct of the subprime mortgage industry, showing how firms often preyed on the weak, avoided public scrutiny of corrupt and illegal practices, and contributed to the economic crisis of 2008. Hudson points out, both on the page and in the interview, that many of the banks and firms involved in the subprime crisis remain powerful and continue to be committed to preventing any meaningful regulation of their practices.
